Experiences of the Care Programme Approach in Bristol: How socially inclusive is it?

A report from the User Focused Monitoring research project.
Publication date: February 2009.

Background

The Care Programme Approach (CPA) is the subject of regular annual scale audits, some national and some local. These audits largely ignore how meaningful the content and process of CPA actually is, how assessments about individuals' needs are made, how it is implemented, etc. They do not explore in any meaningful detail how service users experience CPA as a process or the link between CPA and social inclusion.

In response to this concern which was also reflected in the local service user community, the User Focused Monitoring project sought to:

  • evaluate how CPA in Bristol is helping to support the achievement of secondary mental health service users' needs and aspirations.

The objectives were to:

  • find out Bristol service users' experiences of CPA to get a detailed picture of the process in Bristol
  • explore whether the CPA in Bristol actively engages in a meaningful way with the concept of social inclusion

Who took part?

The project interviewed 100 service users: 60 in the community, 30 inpatients and 10 in forensic services.
