An Overview and Contact Details of Bristol’s Statutory Mental Health Services

This document contains information about Bristol's Statutory Mental Health Services, it gives a brief description of the function of the teams and their contact details. It will be updated on a six-monthly basis. Bristol City Council and Bristol’s two Primary Care Trusts jointly commission Bristol’s Mental Health Service.

The history of this document can be found here

These three authorities are jointly given the responsibility and resources to ensure Bristol’s Mental Health Service meets the needs of people in the city.

The Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP) are commissioned to provide Bristol's statutory, community and hospital based mental health services. The management of Bristol’s services is now integrated and led by one manager

The teams of people directly providing the service will include, especially in community based services, social care and medical staff employed by AWP and Bristol City Council Social Services & Health department (BSS&H). Other services will be commissioned from independent voluntary organisations (e.g. Rethink) and private companies (e.g care homes)

Service Structure- Within the statutory service there is a Working Age Service and a distinct Older Peoples Service.

As a guideline working age is defined as 18 - 64 and older people as 65 and over.
The Working Age Service For the working age service Bristol is divided into 3 sectors

Bristol ’s Assertive Outreach Teams provide intensive support for more severely mentally ill people who find it more difficult to engage with more traditional services. Many of their service users will have a forensic history and/or a dual diagnosis (mental health combined with drugs/alcohol dependency). Care and support is offered in their homes or some other community setting, at times of the day suited to them. Workers can be involved in direct delivery of practical support, care co-ordination and advocacy as well as more traditional therapeutic input. The aim of the service is to maintain contact and increase engagement. Bristol’s Assertive Outreach teams have the following characteristics: a team approach, a defined client group, a team caseload (no larger than 12 service users for each member of staff), planned long-term working with individuals, much of the work outside a service setting, evening and weekend availability with 24 hour access to an on-call system for service users on the team caseload (this may be provided by another team e.g. by the crisis team).

Bristol ’s Crisis and Home Intervention teams, (replaces the Bristol Crisis Teams) provide intensive support for people in mental health crisis in their own home, or suitable alternative places. The team’s function is to provide prompt and effective home treatment, including medication, in order to prevent hospital admissions and give support to informal carers. It will also act as a “gatekeeper” to other mental health services such as acute inpatient care. Staff will be in frequent contact with service users, often seeing them at least once on each shift providing intensive contact over a short period of time. Staff remain involved until the problem is resolved.

Bristol ’s 'Support And Recovery' (Formerly Continuing Needs Rehab) teams are multi-disciplinary and focus on the needs of people with long-term serious mental illness. Caseloads are capped at 15 –20 clients per full-time worker. Intensive input is given to enable clients to develop life skills and pursue educational, social and vocational opportunities.
